MOPS: Mothers of Preschoolers

10:50 AM

Every second and fourth Thursday the kids and I participate in a MOPS group at Parkview Baptist in Tulsa. I have found that MOPS has been an awesome resource for connecting with other moms/women (no, not everyone has preschoolers) in a Christian environment. I often get asked many questions about what we do, and I never have a great answer. Dave thinks it sounds like a cult, so my explanation obviously isn't doing it justice. Since I'm home bound this week, and missing another meeting (and really bummed about missing out on all the fun) I thought I'd fill everyone in on what MOPS is all about.

MOPS is an international Christian ministry for mothers of preschoolers. Our group specifically is a group of moms (our group has around 30ish) that get together, eat, laugh, play games, do a craft, fellowship together, hear from guest speakers, meet in discussion groups, and cram our faces, without having to worry about a 1 year old next to us knocking his juice over. We do all this while our children are receiving quality Christian based childcare in the MOPPETS program (which the kids LOVE). Do we always cram ALL those activities into our 2 hours time span? Sometimes. But mostly, not. Our agenda is structured to allow us to spend Q.T. bonding with other moms, and is not focused on the actual activity itself.

What kind of women attend MOPS? ALL KINDS. There is no "criteria" to be a member. Our group ranges in age from 20 to 60 ish, some women are adoptive mothers and some are grandmothers, come to think of it, some are not mothers yet at all. We all do not attend the same church. Some mothers work, some do not. As one of the younger members of the group, I was really concerned about not having much in common with the other moms. Boy was I wrong! We are all going through it together, young or old. Everyone has something unique to offer to the group that is irreplaceable.

To me, MOPS is a 2 hour break from being a mommy so that I can make myself a better one. By giving me a break from my children, it allows me to enrich my mommy experience, and appreciate this HUGE gift that I have been given.

"Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."
Proverbs 22:6
