Homeschool: 5 Week Update

10:24 PM

When we left public school, I pinned a copy of Ad's second grade report card to my bulletin board. I purposely pinned it closed to hide the contents. I hesitated to use it as a measuring stick for our success, but I was also trying to be realistic. Homeschool was a short term solution for us, and we would transition back to a school setting soon. I looked at that piece of paper the first week we began this journey and it made me feel overwhelmed. After forgetting it was there for the past 5 weeks, I pulled it back out a few days ago. Whoa!!! The progress is incredible. Not only has she mastered everything on that list but SO MUCH MORE.

  • 35 of 50 States names and geographic location
  • An in depth study of the first American colonists
  • The pledges to the Bible and Christian Flag and most of the books of the Old/New testament (in order)
  • How to dissect a simple sentence and label with appropriate parts of speech (Noun/Verb/Adj/Adv/A)
  • The major systems of the human body
  • Complete mastery of addition, subtraction, and time (that stuff is actually on the grade sheet)
This list isn't conclusive, and there are so many lessons we have learned that can't be quantitatively measured. I am, as you can see, a huge proponent of building rote memory skills at this age. It seems to be a controversial topic, but the more you know, the more information you have to draw from when thinking critically and problem solving. Building rote memory also instills discipline, and requires focus and encourages a healthy study habit.

All that being said, there are still times we struggle. The unbearably cold winter has left us socially deprived. We miss our friends. I joined a few local homeschool groups, and the issue isn't the opportunity to socialize but the logistics. Having one child in school, two at home, and a baby that still naps twice (and turns blue in the winter cold) really doesn't leave any room for friends during the week. Soccer and baseball start soon, and with three kids playing four sports (total) I'm certain I will be over-socialized in no time.

We have several exciting options to look in to in the next few months for school options next year, and we are remaining open-minded. Ady's path is set if we decide to go forward with Metro. With three kids of school age this Fall, it is my desire to have all of my kids under one roof, whether that be at school or at home. I am ready to find a home; to settle on a long term solution that will bring security and a sense of grounding to our family. For now, I am continuously reassured and confident in our obedience to Him, and we will continue to pray for our path for the future.
