Our Homeschooling Adventure: Week 1
10:49 AMToday was Ady's first day of kindergarten.
Like I said in my previous post, I am using a curriculum called Sonlight. It takes away all of the guesswork and most of the lesson planning. Sonlight covers all the basics, Language Arts (handwriting, vocabulary, creative expression, spelling, etc.); Math; Science; and World Cultures (history, geography, and Bible). I am supplementing her core curriculum with Spanish, fine arts, and computer skills also. Ady will also participate in dance (jazz, tap, and ballet) and play another season for The Pixiekicks. Although Sonlight has made things a lot easier, I felt that it was imperative that we covered every subject that is covered at MCA, so the transition back will be smooth (when that day comes). That being said, I had a lot of anxiety leading up to today. The thought of effectively teaching all of those subjects was extremely overwhelming to me.
8:00 AM
We started our day a little earlier than usual. We both agreed that the more we could get done before the little boys woke up, the better. I let Ady pick out her outfit for today, but I'm still toying with the idea of making her wear a uniform at home -- man, this girl loves her clothes. We took special pictures, and started our day with the pledges. She informed me that we forgot one, the pledge to the Oklahoma flag. I told her three pledges were plenty. We continued to transition from subject to subject much quicker than I had imagined. We took a few breaks here and there, ate some breakfast, colored with new markers, and played with the boys. By 10:30, we were all but done. (She is watching a Spanish vocabulary DVD while I am blogging) Wow -- much easier than I anticipated. There were some things that were easier to teach than others -- she loved the science lesson; we imitated Earth's rotation on it's axis/around the sun with soccer balls. The handwriting lesson, well that wasn't her favorite. The remainder of the day we will learn by doing (our family calls it Life Skills). We will do our chores, play outside, make lunch, and take our Lily pug to the vet.
This was not a typical first day of school, but I can't imagine better for our family. I love it that I get to experience all these things with her, and her brothers get to participate and feel included. I sure there will be days that I feel impatient and incapable, but today was not that day. It was fun for sure!

Allie, I am so so proud of you !!!!!!! What a reward of Ady especially, to have all of you there with her. I am so thankful for Homeschooling!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I am going to use sonlight when Allison is old enough. What do you use for the Spanish DVD?
ReplyDeleteMiss seeing you!
Paige, I just use DVD's from the library. I have them requested from the main one downtown. It takes us about 2 days to get them. I also print put online worksheets and coloring pages from free websites. I've found the most effective way to teach Ady is to incorporate the vocabulary into our everyday lesson rather than teaching it as a completely different subject.
ReplyDeleteI miss you too -- I know you are working a little for Tony, but if you get a free moment, I'd love to meet you for coffee! One evening maybe!? Let me know :)
Yes! Message me on FB or I will.
